We're digging in to give back to the community in Burnaby

Several FortisBC employees took part in a Community Giving Day in Burnaby’s Stoney Creek Trail system with Evergreen, a non-profit organization devoted to sustainable practices that enable flourishing cities of the future. FortisBC was on hand to plant approximately 350 native trees, ferns and shrubs as part of a restoration project along a decommissioned pathway. The City of Burnaby suggested the project to FortisBC as one that would have a meaningful and positive impact to the municipality, and our people were eager to dig in to help.

The efforts of FortisBC employees helped restore a slope near a decommissioned trail that had been eroding due to human impact. Along with closing the trail, the native plants are bringing the area near the creek closer to its natural state.

This project was important to FortisBC because we believe in giving back to the communities that we serve such as the City of Burnaby,” said Darin Wong, Community and Indigenous Relations Manager for FortisBC. “We have enjoyed an excellent relationship with the City of Burnaby, its residents, and our Burnaby customers over the years and we were pleased to put our efforts toward a project that the community can enjoy for many years to come.”

Every year, FortisBC provides funding for a variety of community initiatives that work towards improving our communities. Community Giving Days provide support to community projects through financial contributions and FortisBC employee volunteer efforts. We strive to have a lasting positive impact in the communities in which we operate by supporting projects that focus on safety, education, environment or Indigenous initiatives.

“This project is important to me personally because as a lifelong resident in the Lower Mainland, including nearly a decade in Burnaby, I am personally invested in seeing the community that I call home continue to be sustainable for the generations to come, including for my own children,” said Wong.
