We’ve reached a major milestone in our Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project—500,000 wireless gas meters are now installed and connected to our private network. This milestone marks significant progress toward modernizing our gas infrastructure and delivering long-term benefits to more than one million customers. We are resuming meter exchange activities in the Summerland area after work was paused in August due to wildfire activity.
We thank residents for their patience and understanding.
We are closely monitoring wildfires across the province, including the Bald Range wildfire. All meter exchange activities have been paused in the Summerland area until further notice. In the event your home or property is evacuated, exit your property immediately and do not turn off your gas at the meter. FortisBC can safely turn off sections of our gas system following the shut off plans we have in place for our entire system and restore service when it is safe to do so.

As part of the Gas AMI Project, FortisBC crews and approved contractors continue to upgrade thousands of gas meters each week across the province. During the summer months, longer daylight hours and warmer weather conditions mean you might see technicians working in your community into the evenings and on weekends. Retrofits for propane meters for customers in Revelstoke are underway. All propane customers will have current meters retrofitted so they can communicate wirelessly, rather than exchanged with an advanced meter. This means technicians will fit current meters with an attachment called a SmartPoint transceiver.
A key difference between an advanced gas meter and existing meters equipped with the SmartPoint attachment is that the retrofitted meters will not include the remote shut-off feature. Learn more about the difference between a meter exchange and a retrofit on our project detail page.
We’re continuing to exchange existing meters with wireless advanced meters during the spring and summer seasons. During this period, booking appointments won’t usually be necessary. If the meter at your address requires an appointment, we’ll attempt to contact you to arrange one. Please keep your account information updated to make it easier for us to contact you. We’ve reached an exciting project milestone: 100,000 advanced gas meters are now connected to our secure and private network. At a later date when the network is activated, the meters will be able to transmit gas consumption data wirelessly, requiring fewer visits to customer properties to read meters manually. In the future, this functionality will also grant customers access to the data to help inform decisions about their gas usage. We’ll be contacting customers to set up appointments for meter exchanges according to region in the fall and winter.
