Meter installation
Over the next several years through our Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project, FortisBC will upgrade gas meters for our more than one million gas customers. We will exchange most existing meters with wireless advanced gas meters. We will retrofit a smaller number of meters with an attachment to enable wireless functionality.
How do I set an appointment?
Most customers won’t need an appointment for the meter exchange during warmer months. In the fall and winter, we’ll keep you updated to make sure you’re able to be present for the meter exchange on a schedule that works best for you if gas services need to be temporarily turned off. This will help to limit interruption to heating services in cold weather.
Fall and winter appointments
In fall and winter, being present during the gas meter exchange is important.
How long will it take to install the new meter?
It usually takes 1-2 hours to install the new meter and, if needed, relight gas appliances.
What if I’m not present during the installation?
Customers won’t usually need an appointment to have a meter exchanged or retrofitted until colder weather arrives. This is because during the exchange process, it’s sometimes necessary to turn off gas services to complete the work safely. In warmer seasons, if customers are not there, we’ll leave information about who to contact to have appliances relit in a timely manner. In fall and winter, your presence during the exchange will help minimize interruption to heating services in colder weather, allowing technicians to turn gas back on and relight appliances at the time the work is completed. In all cases, you’ll need to ensure a clear path and clear access to the gas meter.
Will I have to pay for the installation of the new meter?
There are no separate charges to customers for the meter or its installation, with the exception of the radio-off option.
Who will install the meters?
The work will be completed by FortisBC employees and approved contractors.
