Call before you clear
Before you begin clearing a blocked sewer line, click or call BC 1 Call. You’ll find out if a gas line crosses the sewer line so you can prevent an accident and damages. Here’s what you need to know before clearing a blocked sewer.
Why is there a gas line in your sewer line?
We do line locates before installing gas lines as well as regular inspections. However, it’s still possible utility lines accidentally intersect when installed underground. These are called “cross bores”. A gas line crossing through a sewer pipe is rare and can still co-exist safely. It may even go undetected until the sewer pipe is blocked and needs to be cleared.
In the event of a cross bore, clearing the sewer pipe can damage the gas line. This causes a potential safety hazard for you and surrounding homes and businesses.
What should you do if your sewer line is blocked?
Even if you don't use gas, always contact BC 1 Call, as gas lines could still be nearby. The service is free, easy and available 24 hours a day.
