Power Hours Rewards Program for business
With the Power Hours Rewards Program for businesses, commercial and industrial customers can earn incentives when they sign up and use less electricity during busy times.
What is the Power Hours Rewards Program for businesses?
Power hours are between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.—the time when most people use the most energy. The Power Hours Rewards Program rewards commercial and industrial customers who help lower electricity use during these busy ‘peak demand’ hours. When you sign up your business and take part in power hour events, you can earn incentives.
Working with our customers to help lower peak demand is part of our efforts to keep electricity rates as low as possible and lessen the growing need for new infrastructure.
You can participate by either using the demand response pathway or the load-shifting pathway. If you’re not sure which pathway is right for you, please reach out to us.
Demand response pathway
Demand response events are short periods of time where there is high demand on the electricity system, when we’ll ask participants to reduce their electricity use. You can earn $50 per average kW reduced. This pathway is suitable for most commercial and industrial customers.
- We’ll run demand response events during the winter season (October 1 to April 30) and the summer season (May 1 to September 30). There will be up to 20 events per season, and each will last 1-4 hours, typically between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
- We’ll email you an event notification with 24 hours’ notice and a reminder two hours before the event begins.
- During the event, you or your on-site staff will take actions to reduce electricity. This could include:
- adjusting temperatures or HVAC settings
- delaying the use of high-energy appliances (such as dishwashers or air compressors)
- powering down non-essential equipment
- turning off non-essential lighting
- After each event, your energy usage can return to normal.
Incentive details
You can earn $50 per average kW reduced per season.
- You must take part in at least 60 per cent of demand response events each season (summer and/or winter) to be eligible for the incentive.
- If you opt out of a particular event, this may affect your incentives for that event.
- We will issue incentives at the end of the season.
Sample incentive calculation
- If a business’s typical (baseline) demand from 5-7 p.m. is 80 kW, and they participate in three power hours demand response events between 5-7 p.m. and reduce their electricity use during those hours as follows:
- event 1: 60 kW = 20 kW reduction (80 kW – 60 kW = 20 kW)
- event 2: 55 kW = 25 kW reduction (80 kW – 55 kW = 25 kW)
- event 3: 65 kW = 15 kW reduction (80 kW – 65 kW = 15 kW)
- We calculate the incentives by:
- adding the reductions: 20 kW + 25 kW + 15 kW = 60 kW total saved over three events
- then dividing that total by the number of events: 60 ÷ 3 = 20 kW average reduction per event
- then multiplying that averaged amount by 50 (participants earn $50 for each average kW saved across all events in the season)—in this example, 20 kW x $50 = $1,000 earned for the season
Load-shifting pathway
Load-shifting involves shifting your electricity use daily to off-peak hours based on a customized plan so you use slightly less electricity during peak hours. This shift happens consistently every day. This pathway is intended is for businesses with more predictable daily energy use patterns, such as horticultural customers or electric vehicle fleet-charging. You’ll earn $40 per average daily kW reduced each quarter.
- You’ll work with us to create a plan detailing how your business will shift electricity consumption during periods of peak demand each day. We may ask you to share specific details of this plan with us as needed.
- Each day, you’ll reduce electricity consumption as per your plan. Your load-shifting activities are not controlled by FortisBC. You will manage your electricity consumption.
Incentive details
You can earn $40 per average daily kW reduced, per quarter.
- As long as you participate in the load-shifting pathway, you’ll earn incentives (unless the program ends or your business becomes ineligible for any reason).
- Each month you participate, your average daily demand between 4–9 p.m. is measured.
- The difference between your average 4-9 p.m. demand and your peak demand each quarter is your demand reduction.
- Quarters are:
- January 1 to March 31
- April 1 to June 30
- July 1 to September 30
- October 1 to December 31
Sample incentive calculation
- After making scheduling changes, a business’s average 4-9 p.m. demand is 40 kW during the first quarter of the year.
- Their peak demand during the first quarter of the year is 105 kW.
- Their demand reduction is 65 kW (105 kW – 40 kW = 65 kW).
- They will earn $40 per average daily kW reduced, per quarter.
- Their quarterly incentive is $2,600 (65 kW x $40 = $2,600).
Eligibility
To participate in the Power Hours Rewards Program for businesses, you must:
- be a commercial, industrial or irrigation FortisBC electricity customer
- Note: The Power Hours Rewards Program is currently not available to municipal electricity utility customers of Summerland, Penticton, Grand Forks and Nelson Hydro
- be an owner or long-term leaseholder of an existing commercial or industrial building
- have an available staff member who can work with FortisBC throughout program participation
- choose to participate in either the demand response pathway or the load-shifting pathway, but not both
- not use a more carbon-intensive energy source (e.g. gasoline, diesel, etc.) to reduce electricity usage during power hours events
How to apply
- Review the terms and conditions at the link below and confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements.
