Halfway there! 500K gas meter upgrades completed
September 23, 2026
We’ve reached a major milestone in our Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project—500,000 wireless gas meters are now installed and connected to our private network. This milestone marks significant progress toward modernizing our gas infrastructure and delivering long-term benefits to more than one million customers. While meter exchanges will continue across our service area, here’s what this achievement means for customers today.

Evolving our gas metering infrastructure
A powerful idea guiding our Gas AMI Project is evolution, improving our gas system as the needs of our customers grow and change. In November 2025, we reached the 100,000 gas meter exchange milestone, upgrading existing meters to advanced gas meters in homes and businesses. Less than a year later, we’ve reached the 500,000 meter milestone.
The more meter exchanges we’ve completed, the more we’ve learned. Darren Julyan, AMI program director, talks about the insights we’ve gained since that earlier milestone.
“We’ve learned a lot about how important it is to continue to offer customers flexibility,” Darren says. “Good communication and education—for us and our customers—has really helped with that. Understanding what our customers’ expectations are early on in the process has helped us focus on their needs. That means understanding that not every customer is the same or has the same expectations for the process. We’ve recognized how region, seasonality and weather affect the exchange process and we’ve adapted our processes along the way. These details define what it means to focus on benefiting customers. On reaching our half-million milestone, we have an even better handle on that.”
Having a greater understanding of what flexibility means to different customers has had a huge impact on how our customers see the project today.
“At this point, we’re seeing that people are more comfortable because they can see the value of the project much better than before,” Darren says.
[Customers] recognize how the meter itself will benefit them, including greater access to their energy usage data and some of the safety benefits that we're going to be able to offer them. That resonates with our customers because they realize what we're truly trying to achieve with this technology.

Empowering our customers
Gas meter technology hasn’t changed much over the decades. But our customers’ needs have. Making gas usage data more accessible digitally so customers can track their gas consumption and plan ways to reduce it is one of the ways meter upgrades can help empower customers.
Kira Bennett, customer experience manager at FortisBC, talks about the benefits we can extend to the people we serve by upgrading gas meters to wireless technology.
Affordability is very important to our customers, so, we’re creating a portal to help customers see their unique gas usage patterns so they can better understand their behaviours around their energy use and how it impacts their household costs.
Kira Bennett, customer experience manager
Gas usage data transmitted digitally from an advanced gas meter can empower customers to make more informed decisions about their energy use.
“We’re looking to turn their view of household energy use into something much clearer that customers can interact with,” Kira says. “They’ll be able to set tailored recommendations to help them save money and energy. That will help them track their progress and celebrate smart energy decisions, too. The goal is to empower our customers, taking the self-serve customer experience to a whole new level. We’re looking forward to rolling that out as our efforts to exchange more meters for our customers continues. This milestone brings us one step closer to realizing this customer benefit in the future.”

Gas meter exchanges—notes and resources
If you haven’t had the meter on your property upgraded to an advanced gas meter yet, here’s a brief overview of what to expect.
- We schedule the work by region with each exchange usually taking about one to two hours to complete. To learn when we’re planning meter exchanges in your community, view the schedule map.
- We ask you to maintain a clear path to the meter before and after we’ve exchanged it. Please remove anything that might block access to it, including ice and snow. For more information on why this is important, see these meter safety tips.
- We may have to temporarily turn off gas service during the exchange process, in some cases. To allow easy access to relight appliances after the meter exchange is complete, please keep a clear path to them as well.
- We usually don’t need an appointment to complete meter exchanges, especially in warmer months. But seasonality and weather conditions can affect how we proceed, in some cases. To learn more about that, read this blog post.
- We want to notify you about meter exchanges and regular service updates. To make sure your contact details are current, please make sure to review your account details.
A milestone worth celebrating
We’re working hard to modernize our gas system to benefit our customers. The 500,000 gas meter exchanges milestone shows the progress we’re making. As the work continues, enhancing the customer experience is a main focus.
“Something I’m very excited about as we continue exchanging gas meters as part of our Gas AMI Project are the possibilities for enhancing services to our customers,” Darren Julyan says. “Besides the self-serve aspects of making gas usage data accessible to customers, that information can also make it easier for our customer service representatives to answer any questions with increased insight, allowing greater potential to address issues more easily and efficiently. That’s what makes milestones like this worth celebrating.”
