Stay chill with our summer energy-saving tips
Looking to beat the heat without breaking the bank? These easy energy-saving tips may help you save energy and stay cool all summer long.
Have a heat pump? Keep it at a consistent temperature, use the ‘cool’ mode, and set the fan speed to ‘low’.
Have central air conditioning? Set your thermostat to 25 °C when you’re home and 28 °C when you’re out. Turn it off when you’re away for more than 24 hours.
We’ve got rebates on connected thermostats that can be programmed to automatically adjust the temperature when you’re out or asleep.
Instead of using a central air conditioner for your entire home, use fans or wall-mounted or window-mounted air conditioning units.
This is called ‘zone cooling’ and it’s a great way to save energy because you can turn these units on in the room you’re using and turn them off when you leave that space.
Avoid heating up your kitchen—give your oven, stovetop and other cooking appliances a rest so you don’t need to use more energy cooling your home.
Now is the perfect time to fire up that barbecue or outdoor pizza oven. Or you can enjoy no-cook dinners like wraps, salads and charcuterie plates.
Close everything up during the hottest part of the day to help keep the heat out and consider using awnings to create more shade for your home.
You can also take advantage of those cooler summer evenings by turning off your air conditioner and opening your windows. For more air circulation, install window fans.
Save on water-heating costs and give your dryer a break while the sun is out.
It won’t make your home cooler, but using cold water to wash your laundry and sunshine to dry it could help keep your energy bills lower.
