President and CEO Roger Dall’Antonia recently had the opportunity to chat with Roundhouse Radio about BC’s bright energy outlook and FortisBC’s role in the province’s future energy portfolio.

Spurred by attractive natural gas prices over the past few years, FortisBC has seen a significant increase in the demand for its services and surpassed the one million gas customers’ milestone this past fall, said Dall’Antonia.

Looking into the future, Dall’Antonia sees opportunities for FortisBC to increase both domestic and overseas customers. Seaspan and BC. Ferries are converting their ships to LNG as part of a wave of fuel switching in the marine industry. FortisBC also supplied Canada’s first shipment of LNG to China this year. All of this is made possible by FortisBC’s Tilbury facility, and Dall’Antonia says an expansion at the site is expected to be completed in 2018.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an area of focus for FortisBC, and as part of that emphasis the company reached a memorandum of understanding with the City of Vancouver. Dall’Antonia says the agreement means natural gas will remain part of the energy mix in the City of Vancouver. FortisBC will also work more closely with the City of Vancouver to significantly increase the incentives available for natural gas energy efficiency.
