Making your home more energy efficient is one way to help manage your energy bill as the weather starts to change. Use our low- and no-cost tips to improve your home’s efficiency so you can save energy and money.
Stay comfortable with our energy-saving tips
Is your home letting the outside air in? Try these energy-saving tips to help you save energy and stay comfortable all year long.
Keeping your appliances maintained can help them last longer and work more efficiently.
If you have a furnace, check the filter at least every three months and replace or clean it regularly. Check it more often if there are smokers or pets in the home.
If you have a heat pump, keep the outdoor unit free of vegetation and clutter to allow air to pass freely. The indoor unit also has a filter that can be cleaned or replaced to keep air moving efficiently.
We offer an appliance maintenance rebate for gas customers and a heat pump service rebate for electricity customers to help keep your system working as efficiently as possible.
Instead of trying to heat or cool your entire home, use your energy in the areas you’re using.
In the winter: Use zone heating. Turn on your fireplace or baseboard heaters in the rooms you are using and turn off or lower the heating in unoccupied rooms.
In the summer: Instead of a central air conditioner, use fans, wall-mounted or window-mounted air conditioning units. This is called ‘zone cooling’ and is a great way to save energy because you can turn these units on or off as you enter or leave that space.
Set a schedule so your heating or cooling system only turns on when it’s needed.
In the winter: Set your thermostat to 17 °C when you’re out or asleep, and 20 °C when you’re home and awake.
In the summer: If you have a heat pump, use ‘cool’ mode and set the fan speed to ‘low’. Set your thermostat to 25 °C when you’re home and 28 °C when you’re out. Turn it off when you’re away for more than 24 hours.
We’ve got rebates on connected thermostats that can be programmed to automatically adjust the temperature when you’re out or asleep.
Sealing gaps in exterior walls, insulating light switches and weather-stripping doors can help keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. By making your home more airtight, you can stay comfortable while reducing your energy use. Customers can save up to $600 a year by adding proper weatherstripping to their home.1
