Business natural gas rates

Your business gas rate is made up of commodity and delivery charges, as well as a basic charge. Commodity charges are reviewed by the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) every three months, while delivery charges are reviewed annually. If any rate changes occur, the BCUC always approves them first before they are passed on to you.

There are six rate schedules for different businesses. Choose your rate schedule to learn more about how your rate is structured and to get detailed tariff information.

Please note: With recent approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission, all gas customers will have a portion of their gas automatically designated as Renewable Natural Gas* beginning July 1, 2024. This will support B.C.’s clean energy transformation. No action is required from customers, and we’ll keep you up to date as more information becomes available.

Rate 4

You are a large commercial operation or institution that uses natural gas only in the warmer months between April 1 and November 1 (e.g. municipal swimming pools, summer agricultural crops).

Your rate structure is made up of a fixed daily basic charge that is only applicable to billing periods when gas is consumed. There are also variable charges for each gigajoule of gas based on the time of year it is consumed, including a delivery charge (also called transportation) and a commodity charge (the gas consumed).

Important: This service is intended for seasonal use only. Customers using Rate 4 in the winter months are charged a substantial premium. Rate 4 is authorized by written consent only and specific terms and conditions may apply.

For more details, see Rate 4 tariff documentation or all our general terms and conditions.

Rate 5

You are a large-volume commercial, institutional, multi-family or other customer that uses about 5,000 GJ or more annually. Rate 5 is authorized by written contract only and specific terms and conditions may apply.

Your rate structure is made up of fixed and variable charges:

  • Fixed charges: the two fixed charges are independent of the amount of gas you use each month. These charges include a daily basic charge and a demand volume charge. The demand volume charge is based on a peak daily consumption calculation. It is set once a year and is separate from the volume of gas used each month.
  • Variable charges: apply to each gigajoule of gas used. These charges cover the delivery of gas (also called transportation) and the commodity (the actual gas used).

For more details, see Rate 5 tariff documentation for Mainland and Vancouver Island (including North and South Interior) or for Fort Nelson or all our general terms and conditions.

Rate 6

You are a company with a fleet of natural gas vehicles or one that retails natural gas to customers with natural gas vehicles.

For more details, see Rate 6 tariff documentation for Mainland and Vancouver Island (including North and South Interior) or for Fort Nelson or all our general terms and conditions.

Rate 7

You are a large-volume customer with the ability to switch to an alternative energy source. Rate 7 is authorized by written contract only and specific terms and conditions may apply.

Interruption of service can typically occur during the coldest days of the year and you may be required to stop using natural gas.

Your rate structure is made up of a fixed basic charge and variable charges for each gigajoule of gas you use. Variable charges include the delivery of gas (also called transportation) and a commodity charge (the actual gas used).

For more details, see Rate 7 tariff documentation or all our general terms and conditions.

*Renewable Natural Gas (also called RNG or biomethane) is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create RNG. When RNG is added to North America’s natural gas system, it mixes with conventional natural gas. This means we’re unable to direct RNG to a specific customer. But the more RNG is added to the gas system, the less conventional natural gas is needed, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels and overall greenhouse gas emissions.
