What is our approach to environmental and heritage resource management?
Our approach to environmental and heritage resource management includes planning for, monitoring and responding to potential impacts of our projects while following industry standards and meeting regulatory requirements.
Where possible, our approach includes:
- conducting project screenings and assessments to identify environmental and heritage sensitivities, including potential effects on fish and wildlife, sensitive ecosystems, species at risk and critical habitat and heritage resources
- using the mitigation hierarchy, where we take steps to help avoid, minimize or offset environmental and heritage impacts in planning and implementing our work
- developing environmental management plans and implementing mitigation measures that outline project-specific environmental and heritage protection and include, but are not limited to, water and soil management, erosion and sediment control and fish and wildlife habitat protection
We follow our Safety and Environmental Policy and use an environmental management system to guide our work.
This system helps us:
- meet regulatory requirements
- follow company policies and industry standards
- improve our practices over time
We also have environmental experts across the province who provide training and support. They help ensure employees and contractors understand key potential impacts to environmental and heritage resources.

1Renewable Natural Gas (also called “RNG”) is produced from biogas at dedicated RNG production facilities. Biogas is derived from decomposing organic waste at landfills or agricultural and other organic waste such as wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured, upgraded and processed to create RNG that is added to existing energy infrastructure. This means we’re unable to direct RNG to a specific customer. However, because RNG displaces conventional natural gas, the more RNG that is added to the gas system, the less conventional natural gas is used.
