Refrigeration equipment rebates

Save on upgrading to ENERGY STAR® fridges, freezers and ice machines as well as controls for refrigerated display cases to help save energy costs while keeping products chilled and attractive for customers.

Eligibility

  1. You must be a commercial, industrial or irrigation FortisBC or municipal electricity customer of Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland or Nelson Hydro.
  2. You must be an owner or long-term leaseholder of an existing commercial or industrial building or a builder/developer or owner of a new commercial or industrial construction project.
  3. You must submit an application and supporting documentation no later than 365 days after the purchase date of the product(s) (as shown on the paid invoice) or installation date, whichever is first.

Energy efficiency ratings are based on ENERGY STAR certification requirements, available at energystar.gov.

Commercial refrigerators and freezers

ENERGY STAR certified commercial fridges or freezers are rated to be 20 per cent more energy efficient than standard efficiency models.

Display cases

Upgrades such as LED lighting sensors and door controls can help save electricity costs, make products look attractive and keep customers comfortable when shopping.

Anti-sweat heater humidistat control low temperature (reduces anti-sweat heater run time by at least 50 per cent) $40 per linear foot of display case
  • must control the anti-sweat heater load of reach-in doors, which includes any heating element in door rail, glass and frame
medium temperature (reduces anti-sweat heater run time by at least 80 per cent)
Refrigerated display case with doors medium temperature: 0 to 5 °C $115 per linear foot of display case
  • must replace a vertical model without doors and have a temperature of 0 to 5 °C
Refrigerated display case night cover $30 per linear foot of display case
  • night covers should not be in use prior to rebate application
  • when in use, must be applied for at least six hours in a 24-hour period
Refrigerated display case occupancy sensors low temperature $1.50 per linear foot of display case
  • must use a motion sensor to activate a lighting control system that reduces permanently installed LED lighting to 20 per cent or less of a full load when area is unoccupied, as indicated on manufacturer’s specification sheet

Electronically commutated motor systems

Upgrading your refrigeration system motors can help save electricity costs.

Floating head pressure controls

These controls help hold temperature better, helping to reduce product loss and save electricity costs.

  • controls must have a programmed minimum saturation temperature of 21 °C or less
  • compressor must be 1 hp or greater

Ice machines

ENERGY STAR certified commercial ice machines or ice makers are rated to be 15 per cent more energy efficient and 20 per cent more water efficient than standard-efficiency models.

Refrigeration controls

Auto-closers for doors and fan controllers help reduce the need for staff to close cooler and freezer doors manually and help maintain temperature conditions, thus saving electricity.

Type Rebate Requirements
Auto-closers for cooler and freezer doors $75 per door
  • must be installed on existing walk-in or reach-in cooler
Evaporator fan controllers for walk-in coolers and freezers $115 per controller
  • must reduce the airflow of evaporator fan in an existing walk-in cooler or freezer when the compressor cycles off and no refrigerant flows through the evaporator
  • must reduce fan motor power by at least 75 per cent during the compressor off cycle

Vending machine controllers

Installing vending controllers on existing machines can help save energy and maintain products during periods of low use.

Type Rebate Requirements
Vending machine controller $200 per controller
  • only retrofits of existing vending machines are eligible for rebates
  • must be plugged into a standard refrigerated vending machine, not an ENERGY STAR certified model
  • must be capable of periodically powering up vending machine to maintain product
  • must power down the compressor and lighting when the surrounding area has been unoccupied for 15 minutes or more

How to apply

  1. Purchase and install qualifying equipment.
  2. Apply online for your refrigeration equipment rebate with the following information:
    • your FortisBC electricity account number or municipal account number from Penticton, Summerland, Grand Forks or Nelson Hydro
    • your email
    • scanned or PDF copies of all paid receipts for the purchase and installation of products relevant to the rebate you are applying for
  3. Ensure all receipts are marked “paid,” clear, legible, itemized and indicate relevant information such as brand, model number and any other required information in your application.
