Stay alert, stay safe: FortisBC reminds public of summer safety risks near dams

Jun 26, 2025

Respect safety signage and avoid restricted areas as water conditions can change quickly

KELOWNA, B.C.—June 26, 2025: With summer in full swing and more people enjoying the outdoors, FortisBC Inc. (FortisBC) is reminding the public to stay alert and stay safe around hydroelectric dams in the Kootenay region. Clearly marked restricted zones and safety signage must be respected at all times.

“We understand the waterways along the Kootenay River are beautiful and attract outdoor enthusiasts,” said Ada Nadison, public safety program manager at FortisBC. “But the reality is that water levels can rise or fall quickly and without warning as we manage flows to generate electricity. It’s critical that people pay attention to posted signage. Safety barriers and signage are in place for a reason—they’re based on years of operating experience and designed to protect the public.”

FortisBC operates several hydroelectric dams along the Kootenay River. When participating in popular activities like fishing, swimming and boating, it’s important to follow all posted signs and avoid restricted zones.

Activities like swimming, cliff diving or boating near spillways are especially dangerous due to sudden water releases, powerful currents and rapidly changing flows. These hazards are often invisible and can occur without warning.

FortisBC’s hydroelectric dams and facilities meet rigorous safety standards, but safety also requires public awareness and responsible behaviour. To help everyone enjoy the outdoors safely, FortisBC urges the public to follow these dam safety tips:

  • Obey all safety signage and barriers, including fences, gates, booms, markers and buoys.
  • Stay clear of restricted zones above and below dams, including areas marked as private property.
  • Avoid shoreline areas that could become submerged or cut off as water levels change.
  • Never anchor or stop a boat near a dam, and always turn around well before reaching it.
  • Supervise children at all times and avoid taking unnecessary risks near water.
  • Use caution around slippery rocks, changing currents and floating debris, especially in shallow or narrow areas.

Backgrounder

FortisBC owns and operates four hydroelectric dams on the Kootenay River, providing approximately 45 per cent of the annual electricity needs of its customers. The dams include the Corra Linn, Upper Bonnington, Lower Bonnington and South Slocan plants. Additionally, FortisBC operates and maintains five other generating plants owned by third parties, including the Waneta Dam, Waneta Expansion, Arrow Lakes Generating Station, Brilliant Dam and the Brilliant Expansion.

Increasing public awareness about safety around hydroelectric dams, reservoirs and generating stations is a top priority for FortisBC. The company urges individuals to take extra care and understand the rules and hazards to ensure the safety of their families and loved ones. FortisBC’s hydroelectric generation sites have a long history of safe and reliable operation. Under the company's safety program, dams are inspected annually to ensure continued safe operation.
