Affordable Renewable Natural Gas options
For as little as a few dollars a month for an average home, you can choose to designate five, 10, 25, 50 or 100 per cent of the natural gas you use as Renewable Natural Gas.1 You'll also receive a credit on the BC carbon tax on your bill, depending on the blend you choose.
Which blend is right for you?

Energy cost comparison
Renewable Natural Gas remains an affordable option to heat your home when compared with other renewable energy sources such as electricity. The graph below shows the cost of a 100 per cent Renewable Natural Gas blend for an average residential customer. If you choose a five, 10, 25 or 50 per cent blend, the cost will be even lower.
Residential gas $/kWh price comparison
Note: Natural gas use is typically measured in gigajoules (GJ). In order to compare the cost of natural gas and Renewable Natural Gas with electricity, which is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), we did a conversion from GJ to kWh so we can compare the cost of all four in the same terms.
Average Renewable Natural Gas cost
As of January 1, 2019, customers who choose to designate a percentage of their natural gas use as Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), will see a slight increase of $0.248 per GJ to the Cost of Biomethane on their natural gas bill. Below we’ve calculated the additional cost for the different blends of Renewable Natural Gas for the average customer.3
Based on an average annual usage of 90 GJ:
|Monthly Renewable Natural Gas cost||$2.63||$5.25||$13.13||$26.25||$52.51|
|Annual Renewable Natural Gas cost||$32||$63||$158||$315||$630|
For your business
Based on an average annual usage of 326 GJ:
|Monthly Renewable Natural Gas cost||$9.51||$19.02||$47.55||$95.10||$190.19|
|Annual Renewable Natural Gas cost||$114||$228||$571||$1,141||$2,282|
Based on an average annual usage of 3,549 GJ:
|Monthly Renewable Natural Gas cost||$103.53||$207.05||$517.64||$1,035.27||$2,070.55|
|Annual Renewable Natural Gas cost||$1,242||$2,485||$6,212||$12,423||$24,847|
Why is there an additional cost for Renewable Natural Gas?
The biogas produced at the farms and landfills we work with must be captured, cleaned and injected into our system, and our suppliers need to be compensated fairly for this labour-intensive process.
1Renewable Natural Gas is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities.
The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).
2GHG equivalent of diverting waste from our landfills through recycling. Source: Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator. In the event FortisBC has an imbalance between the demand for Renewable Natural Gas and the supply, FortisBC may purchase offsets to retain the equivalent greenhouse gas reductions that you would receive from the Renewable Natural Gas supply.
3Renewable Natural Gas rate is subject to yearly rate adjustments and conventional natural gas rate is subject to quarterly rate adjustments.
