Additional $86 million to help FortisBC customers save energy and lower costs

Newly approved funding through to 2027 following strong customer participation in energy-efficiency programs in 2025

SURREY, B.C.—September 1, 2026: More FortisBC Energy Inc. (“FortisBC”) customers will be able to access energy-efficiency rebates and programs after the British Columbia Utilities Commission recently approved an additional $86 million in funding for FortisBC’s gas conservation and energy-efficiency initiatives through 2027. The funding will help meet higher-than-expected customer demand for programs that help customers lower their energy use and manage costs at a time when affordability is top of mind.

“Our customers are looking for practical ways to manage their energy costs. Participation in our energy-efficiency programs helps them lower their energy use,” said Danielle Wensink, director, conservation and energy management, FortisBC. “With this newly approved funding, we can help build on the strong participation in our programs to support more customers in making their homes, businesses and communities more energy efficient.”

The approval follows record participation in FortisBC programs in 2025, when customers completed nearly 82,000¹ energy-efficiency projects across British Columbia. To support this work, FortisBC invested a record $267 million across its electricity and gas conservation and energy-efficiency programs, which is a 55 per cent increase from 2024.² These projects are now delivering tangible benefits for customers such as lower energy use, reduced energy costs and improved building performance.

For example, National Society of Hope recently completed Capstone, a multi-family building in Kelowna that now provides 122 affordable rental homes for families, seniors and people living with disabilities. To lower energy costs for their residents, they accessed support for triple-glazed windows, LED lights and high-efficiency gas and electricity systems.

“We’re proud of the work and collaboration to bring this project to life and support our growing community with safe, secure, affordable housing,” said Ken Zeitner, executive director at the National Society of Hope. “It was important that this building helped residents manage their energy costs so prioritizing energy efficiency was key. The funding we received from FortisBC and other project partners was critical to the success of the project and we’re grateful for the support.”

These FortisBC programs also support businesses like Windset Farms, a controlled environmental agriculture producer and marketer of sustainable, greenhouse grown produce in Delta. They installed high-efficiency upgrades in their greenhouses that are helping lower annual energy use by more than 100,000 gigajoules (GJ). These actions show their commitment to growing local produce more energy efficiently.

“Making energy-efficient upgrades to our operations supports our vision to grow sustainable produce for our planet,” said Steven Newell, chief executive officer at Windset Farms. “We’ve worked with FortisBC for more than 20 years and participated in many of their rebate programs to upgrade our greenhouse facilities in Delta and those upgrades have made a difference to our energy use. Taking these steps has helped us lower our operating costs and produce fresh, locally grown vegetables for our customers more efficiently, using fewer resources.”

Residential customers also play a critical role when they make high-efficiency upgrades to their homes and adopt energy-saving behaviours. FortisBC is now reviewing its program plans and finalizing how the approved funding will be allocated across rebate programs, including residential and income qualified, through the end of 2027.

Key facts

• FortisBC Energy Inc. is in the third year of a four-year plan to invest in energy-efficiency and conservation programs (also known as demand side management or DSM). The additional funding brings the anticipated combined investment in both gas and electricity programs to over $780 million from 2024 through 2027, up from the $694.8 million that was approved in 2024.
• In 2025, FortisBC invested close to $248 million in gas conservation and energy-efficiency programs and more than $19 million in electricity programs³ and supported almost 82,000 projects in 2025 for residential, commercial, industrial, Indigenous and income-qualified customers.⁴
• Collectively, the gas efficiency and conservation projects completed last year are expected to lower annual gas use by more than 1.3 million GJ, the equivalent energy use of around 15,000 homes for a year.⁵ They are expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions by more than 92,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent,⁶ this is the equivalent energy use of more than 40,000 homes for a year.⁷
• Collectively, the electricity conservation projects completed last year are expected to lower annual electricity use by 49.6 gigawatt hours.⁸ This is the equivalent energy use needed to power more than 1,600 homes for a year.⁹
• FortisBC is also developing its 2028-2032 Demand Side Management Plan. This plan will outline future energy-efficiency initiatives and programs to continue to help customers save energy.
