B.C. Environmental Assessment Office accepts FortisBC’s revised Environmental Assessment Application

Mar 30, 2026

SURREY, B.C.—March 30, 2026: FortisBC’s revised Environmental Assessment Application for the Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project has been accepted by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (BC EAO). This revised application incorporates feedback received by Indigenous groups, stakeholders, and government agencies during the application review phase. Located within the existing Tilbury LNG facility footprint, the project serves three key purposes:

  • To help strengthen the resiliency of the Lower Mainland gas system in the event of a supply disruption,
  • To ensure that our current Lower Mainland customers and anticipated population growth continue to have reliable and economical energy with the construction of a new LNG storage tank and,
  • To serve emerging markets for LNG as a lower-carbon fuel such as for marine fueling with the construction of additional liquefaction capacity.

FortisBC believes that it can help customers lower emissions by expanding access to LNG. FortisBC has developed a Net-zero plan for the project in accordance with the Province’s Net-Zero New Industry Policy.

In 2022, the Musqueam Indian Band (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) and FortisBC signed an agreement, that has both parties working in close collaboration with the shared goal of developing a world-leading LNG facility that will result in sustainable and economic outcomes for Musqueam and the region.

The revised Environmental Assessment application follows the completion of a 180-day Review period led by the BC EAO, which included a 45-day public comment period with opportunities for the public to learn about the project and participate in both in-person and virtual information sessions.

Future public engagement will be hosted on the Province’s EPIC.engage platform and through accessible virtual information sessions, consistent with the BC EAO’s Public Engagement Policy and Public Comment Policy.
