FortisBC support for smart thermostats can help homeowners manage energy use

Mar 25, 2026

Instant in-store and online rebates support “set-it and forget-it” technology that helps customers manage energy use and make informed decisions

SURREY, B.C.—March 25, 2026: Smart connected thermostats are emerging as a quiet workhorse that helps homeowners manage energy use automatically without sacrificing comfort. To help increase adoption, FortisBC is working with select hardware stores and online retailers to offer instant rebates for a limited time. Through these energy-saving initiatives, FortisBC is better positioned to meet energy demand during peak periods like hot summers and cold winters.

“We’re focused on helping customers manage their energy use in simple and effective ways,” said John Tideman, conservation and energy management program manager, residential. “Smart thermostats can be relatively easy to install, and some can automatically learn daily habits, keeping homes comfortable while helping reduce energy use—without customers having to think about it.”

Smart thermostats connect to Wi‑Fi and automatically adjust temperatures based on schedules, location or learned routines—delivering consistent results with little day‑to‑day effort. Customers who install and program a smart thermostat can save up to 15 per cent on their home heating costs.1 In addition to helping households manage their energy use, connected thermostats can also support energy reliability by helping utilities manage energy demand during peak periods, like through FortisBC’s Power Hours Rewards Program.

As part of its efforts to support the adoption of smart thermostats, FortisBC has some easy-to-follow tips:

  • Set a schedule in the app and use any pre-built templates to help get started.
  • Turn the geofencing feature on (if available) so it will automatically turn the temperature down when the phone leaves home.
  • If a contractor installs the smart thermostat, ask them for insight and guidance on how to use this new system.

FortisBC offers instant rebates for smart thermostats in select stores for customers from March 1-October 31, 2026. Last year, close to 6,000 customers purchased a smart thermostat and received an instant rebate reflecting growing interest in easy and effective ways to manage household energy use.

Smart thermostats offer a practical next step so homeowners can enjoy a more efficient, comfortable home—proving that a few small changes can make a big difference and give customers greater control over their energy use.
