We deliver natural gas, electricity and propane and continue to acquire lower carbon energy,1 including natural gas designated as Renewable Natural Gas2 (RNG). We supply reliable and affordable energy and help support the provincial government’s climate action goals, serving more than 1.3 million customers across our service areas that include 135 B.C. communities and 58 First Nations communities across 150 Traditional Territories.

As we work to deliver energy to homes and businesses across B.C., our values help shape our approach to sustainability. Sustainability underlies how we invest in, operate and continuously improve our business, while providing the energy our customers need, safely, affordably and reliably.

Continuing to acquire renewable and lower carbon gases

We’re helping to lower overall emissions by continuing to acquire lower carbon energy, including natural gas designated as Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). We work with a range of RNG suppliers like farms, landfills and wastewater treatment facilities to capture and upgrade biogas to create RNG. We’re also looking at ways to advance other lower carbon gases, such as hydrogen, to be used in our system instead of conventional natural gas.

Increasing investments in energy efficiency

We’re investing record amounts in conservation and energy-efficiency programs to help support the provincial government's climate action goals. These programs can help customers lower energy use and associated emissions and support affordability. By 2027, we will invest a record $697.6 million3 in energy-efficiency initiatives to help build the next-generation of energy-saving programs.

Lowering emissions in the transportation sector

To support lower carbon transportation, we work with fleet vehicle operators to replace diesel with both conventional natural gas and natural gas designated as RNG, and marine operators to replace petroleum-based fuels such as oil and diesel with LNG. We continued to help companies lower their associated emissions through the adoption of vehicles powered with CNG and compressed RNG. To date, we have supported the conversion of about 1,4004 commercial vehicles.

In 2025, our public charging network delivered approximately 919,100 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, a 32 per cent increase from 2024. We own and operate 42 Direct Current Fast Charging stations at 22 sites in 20 communities within our electricity service area.

Fuelling ships with LNG

We’re helping marine transportation customers reduce emissions by expanding access to LNG through the development of new infrastructure and increasing our production capacity and fuelling options. FortisBC LNG has a lower carbon intensity compared with global average because its LNG supply emissions are 29 per cent lower compared to the global average LNG supply on a well-to-tank basis.5

Indigenous relationships and Reconciliation

1FortisBC uses the term lower carbon energy to refer collectively to electricity and the lower carbon gases or fuels that the utility can produce, use and/or acquire under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Clean Energy) Regulation (“Regulation”). The Regulation identifies different sources of electricity and gas that are prescribed based on their feedstock and production processes. FortisBC’s lower carbon energy portfolio includes Renewable Natural Gas (also called “RNG”) and electricity. Other gases and fuels may be added to the portfolio over time. FortisBC’s lower carbon energy portfolio is lower carbon when compared to conventional natural gas.

2Renewable Natural Gas (also called “RNG”) is produced from biogas at dedicated RNG production facilities. Biogas is derived from decomposing organic waste at landfills or agricultural and other organic waste such as wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured, upgraded and processed to create RNG that is added to existing energy infrastructure. This means we’re unable to direct RNG to a specific customer. However, because RNG displaces conventional natural gas, the more RNG that is added to the gas system, the less conventional natural gas is used.

3This is a combined amount for both the gas and electricity utilities and includes inflation. When a carryover of $2.778 million is added to the (unrounded) amount of $694.831 million, the total combined amount becomes $697.609 million.
