Meter installation
Over the next several years through our Gas Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project, FortisBC will upgrade gas meters for our more than one million gas customers. We will exchange most existing meters with wireless advanced gas meters. We will retrofit a smaller number of meters with an attachment to enable wireless functionality.
Advanced meter exchanges—spring and summer
Our process for conducting meter exchanges can change by season. Check the seasonal tabs on this page for details about what to expect at each time of year.
Meter exchanges in spring and summer
In the spring and summer seasons, technicians can usually exchange meters without the need for appointments. Whatever time of year it is, please make sure the area around the meter is clear to give technicians access to safely complete the exchange. We change our meter exchange process depending on temperatures.
How do I set an appointment, if needed?
In most cases, meter exchange appointments aren’t necessary in spring and summer months. If the meter exchange at your address requires an appointment, we’ll attempt to contact you to arrange one. Please keep your account contact details current to help make it easy for us to connect with you. You can also request an appointment by getting in touch with our customer service team at 1-888-224-2710 from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.
What if I’m not present during the installation?
Customers won’t usually need an appointment to have a meter exchanged or retrofitted until colder weather arrives. This is because during the exchange process, it’s sometimes necessary to turn off gas services to complete the work safely. In warmer seasons, if customers are not there, we’ll leave information about who to contact to have appliances relit in a timely manner. If appointments are required at your address during spring and summer seasons, we’ll attempt to arrange one with you in advance as indicated above.

Meter exchanges in fall and winter
When colder weather comes to British Columbia, minimizing interruptions to gas service and home heating is essential during advanced gas meter exchanges. At any time of year, you can help by making sure access to the meter is clear so technicians can safely complete the work.
How do I set an appointment, if needed?
In many cases during the fall and winter, we’re calling and emailing customers to book appointments for the meter exchange to limit interruption to home heating. Please be sure your account details are always current to make it easier for us to contact you. You can also request an appointment by getting in touch with our customer service team at 1-888-224-2710 from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. We’ll generally book appointments when meter exchanges are planned for your community.
When are appointments being set in my region?
Appointments will generally range from October to March for the North, the Okanagan, the Kootenays, Squamish, and Fraser Valley East. For the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, the appointment-setting period ranges from November to February. Please note, appointments for advanced meter exchanges are also weather dependent, which means we might be able to complete the exchange without an appointment when weather is mild.
What if I’m not present during the installation?
In fall and winter, your presence during the exchange will help minimize interruption to heating services in colder weather, allowing technicians to turn gas back on and relight appliances at the time the work is completed. In all cases, you’ll need to ensure a clear path and clear access to the gas meter.

How long will it take to install the new meter?
It usually takes one to two hours to install the new meter and, if needed, relight gas appliances.
Will I have to pay for the installation of the new meter?
There are no separate charges to customers for the meter or its installation, with the exception of the radio-off option.
Who will install the meters?
The work will be completed by FortisBC employees and approved contractors. For more information, consult our schedule map.
