How much does Renewable Natural Gas cost?

The cost of Renewable Natural Gas1 (RNG) depends on the blend you choose. You can designate 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 per cent of the gas you use as RNG. You'll also receive a credit on the BC carbon tax on your bill, depending on the blend you choose.

Choose your RNG blend

The graph below shows the cost of a 100 per cent RNG blend for an average residential customer. If you choose a five, 10, 25 or 50 per cent blend, the cost will be lower.

Note: Gas use is typically measured in gigajoules (GJ). In order to compare the cost of natural gas and RNG with electricity, which is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), we did a conversion from GJ to kWh so we can compare the cost of all four in the same terms.

Average RNG cost

As of January 1, 2024, customers who choose to designate a percentage of their gas use as RNG will pay a rate of $12.468 per GJ for the cost of biomethane on their gas bill. Below we’ve calculated the additional cost for the different blends of RNG for the average customer.2

1 Renewable Natural Gas (also called RNG or biomethane) is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create low-carbon Renewable Natural Gas.

2 Renewable Natural Gas rate is subject to yearly rate adjustments and conventional natural gas rate is subject to quarterly rate adjustments. The BC carbon tax on natural gas, which is set by the provincial government and collected by FortisBC on their behalf, is also subject to periodic adjustments.
