Our free Energy Saving Kit for income-qualified households contains products to help you reduce the amount of energy you use in your home.

Eligibility requirements*

  1. You must have a residential electricity account with one of the following utilities:
    • BC Hydro, FortisBC, New Westminster, Grand Forks, Summerland, Penticton or Nelson Hydro
  2. Your household income must be below the income cut-off.
  3. Only one Energy Saving Kit per customer.

 What’s included in the Energy Saving Kit?

 
The kit contains easy-to-install items, which may include:
  • a water-efficient showerhead
  • kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators
  • weatherstripping
  • window film
  • outlet and switch plate sealers
  • a refrigerator/freezer thermometer
  • an LED night light and four LED light bulbs
  • a furnace filter coupon (for homes with a natural gas furnace) 
  • installation guide

How to apply

Select your electricity provider:

BC Hydro or New Westminster electricity customers

  1. Review the full terms and conditions.
  2. Apply online with the following information: 
    • your electricity account number
    • total household income 
    • number of people in your household 
    • home address
  3. You can also apply by calling 1-800-BCHYDRO (1-800-224-9376) or 604-224-9376 in the Lower Mainland, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  4. Please allow three to six weeks for delivery.
FortisBC electricity or municipal* electricity customers

  1. Review the full terms and conditions.
  2. Sign up online with the following information:
    • your electricity account number 
    • email address
    • total household income
    • number of people in your household
    • home address
  3. You can also apply by calling 1-866-436-7847 Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  4. Please allow six to eight weeks for delivery.

* Grand Forks, Summerland, Penticton or Nelson Hydro.

 

 Proof of income options

 
If requested, submit a copy of one of the following for each member of the household over 18 years of age.
Ensure all information is blacked out except for your name, effective date and income (Line 150 if you are submitting a Notice of Assessment).
  • Notice of Assessment (NOA): Submit a copy of your NOA from the Canada Revenue Agency for a current income tax return.
  • Social Assistance: Submit your monthly cheque stub, or a printed copy of your Confirmation of Assistance if registered for My Self Serve.
  • Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER): Submit either your SAFER cheque stub, acknowledgment letter or benefit change letter from BC Housing.
  • Rental Assistance Program: Submit your Rental Assistance Program acknowledgment or benefit change letter from BC Housing.
  • National Child Benefit Supplement: Submit your benefit notice from Canada Revenue Agency.

How to get your NOA

  • The NOA is the document Canada Revenue Agency sends you after filing your tax return. If you have your most current NOA, send us a copy with your application.
  • If you do not have your NOA, use Canada Revenue Agency’s My Account service to view and print a copy of your information.
  • You can also call them to request your NOA at 1-800-959-8281. Agents are available Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Help for housing providers

Non-profit housing providers can have their units upgraded with various energy-efficient products. To learn more call:

  • 1-877-806-3242 if you’re a BC Hydro or New Westminster electricity customer
  • 1-866-436-7847 if you’re a FortisBC electricity or municipal electricity customer
