Natural gas boiler rebates

Whether building new or upgrading, improve your building’s energy performance and qualify for a rebate of up to $45,000 by installing a high-efficiency natural gas boiler. And now, food processors, greenhouses and other commercial customers who use process heat are also eligible for rebates.

Are you eligible?*

  1. You must be a FortisBC commercial rate class natural gas customer.
  2. You must be a property owner or long-term leaseholder of an existing commercial building
    or a builder/developer or property owner of a new commercial construction project.
  3. You must be using the boiler for space, pool and/or process heating. (Note: backup, standby or secondary boilers are not eligible.)
  4. Submit an application and supporting documentation no later than 365 days after the purchase date of the product(s) (as shown on the paid invoice) or installation date (as shown on the Gas Inspection Request or Gas Certificate of Inspection), whichever is first.

Available rebates

Rebate amounts are determined by the size and efficiency of the boiler.

Note: The rebate amounts for boilers sized 300 MBH and higher are included on our eligible boiler list.

Eligible boilers

New boilers sized up to 299 MBH must be designated as an ENERGY STAR® certified boiler at the time of purchase to be eligible for a rebate.

New boilers sized 299 MBH and higher must have a Thermal Efficiency (TE) of 85 per cent or greater and be listed on the AHRI certified Commercial Boilers List. Boiler listed on AHRI that meet or exceed the Thermal Efficiency requirement at the time a rebate application1 is received will be eligible for a rebate, subject to program terms and conditions.

1 AHRI listing at the time when the application was received will be considered as well as historical listings of two years prior to the date when the application was received.

Right-sizing means more money in your pocket

Qualifying boilers installed in existing buildings may be eligible for a right-sizing bonus if they are sized in accordance with FortisBC’s Boiler Sizing and Quality Installation Guidelines. The right sizing bonus incentive is the lesser of the invoiced amount:

  • or $500 for boiler systems with an input rating up to 1,500 MBH
  • or $1,000 for boiler systems with an input rating of 1,500 MBH or higher

How to apply

  1. Review the terms and conditions.
  2. Ensure the boiler you plan to buy is on the eligible boiler list. If you have questions, please contact us before you purchase and install a boiler. 
  3. Contact a gas or mechanical contractor, licensed with the Technical Safety BC, to install your boiler(s). You can find one through our Trade Ally Network.
  4.  Email your completed application form to within 365 days of the purchase date (as shown on the paid invoice) or installation date (as shown on the Gas Inspection Request or Gas Certificate of Inspection), whichever is first. Be sure to provide copies of:
    1. the Gas Inspection Request or Gas Certificate of Inspection from your municipality or the Technical Safety BC
    2. the fully paid invoice including make, model number and serial number of the eligible boiler(s) purchase and installed. New construction projects may alternatively provide proof of payment in the form of a final progress draw invoice for the new building AND engineer-approved shop drawings that indicate the job name and site address as proof of make, model and serial number(s) of the eligible boiler(s).
  5. For the right-sizing bonus
    1. Participants wishing to receive the eligible boiler right-sizing bonus must complete and submit an estimate of the building heating load in accordance with FortisBC's boiler sizing & quality installation guidelines.
    2. Calculations showing the estimated building heating load as well as the invoice for the calculations must be submitted with the application.

We recommend you submit your application and supporting documents together to reduce processing time. If you can’t submit your application via email, please contact us to arrange an alternate method of delivery.

Thermal Energy Service Providers (TESP) administration process and fee2

​Participants who are customers of a TESP are subject to the following administration fees:

  • a $825 administration fee for evaluation of the program application
  • an additional $490 administration fee for evaluation of eligibility for the right-sizing bonus

The applicable administration fees are to be deducted directly from any rebate the participant is otherwise entitled. If the rebate is less than or equal to the applicable administration fee the net rebate provided to the participant will be $0. Participants who are customers of a TESP are not eligible for a right-sizing bonus if their eligible boiler has an input rating of less than 1,500 MBH.

2A TESP is defined as an individual or organization other than the participant, who will/does own thermal energy generating assets such as the eligible water heaters, for the purpose of selling the thermal energy generated therefrom to the participant.
