Natural gas boilers

Install a high-efficiency boiler for a rebate of up to $45,000.

Whether building new or upgrading, improve your building’s energy performance and qualify for a rebate by installing a high-efficiency natural gas boiler. And now, food processors, greenhouses and other commercial customers who use process heat are also eligible for rebates.

Eligibility requirements*

  1. You must be a FortisBC commercial rate class natural gas customer.
  2. You must be a property owner or long-term lease-holder of an existing commercial building or
    a builder/developer or property owner of a new commercial construction project.
  3. You must be using the boiler for space, pool and/ or process heating (Note: backup, standby or secondary boilers are not eligible.).
  4. Applications must be submitted within 180 days of the purchase date (as shown on the paid invoice) or installation date (as show on the Gas Notification of Completion, Installation or Alteration), whichever is first.

Available rebates

Rebate amounts are determined by the size and efficiency of the boiler.

Note: The rebate amounts for boilers sized 300 MBH and higher are included on our eligible boiler list.

Eligible boilers

For replacement market 

The rebate is applicable to ENERGY STAR® certified boilers sized up to 299 MBH and eligible mid-efficiency and condensing boilers sized 300 MBH and higher.  

For new construction

The rebate is applicable to ENERGY STAR certified boilers sized up to 299 MBH and eligible condensing boilers sized 300 MBH and higher.  

Boilers sized 300 MBH and larger must be included on our list of eligible boilers at the time of purchase to qualify for a rebate.

Right-sizing means more money in your pocket

Qualifying boilers installed in existing buildings may be eligible for a right-sizing bonus if they are sized in accordance with FortisBC’s Boiler Sizing and Quality Installation Guidelines. The right sizing bonus incentive is:

  • up to $500 for boiler systems with an input rating up to 1,500 MBH
  • up to $1,000 for boiler systems with an input rating of 1,500 MBH or higher

How to apply

  1. Review the terms and conditions.
  2. Ensure the boiler you plan to buy is on the eligible boiler list. If you have questions, please contact us before you purchase and install a boiler. 
  3. Contact a gas or mechanical contractor, licensed with the BC Safety Authority, to install your boiler(s). You can find one through our Trade Ally Network.
  4. Email your completed application form to commercialrebates@fortisbc.com within 180 days of the purchase date (as shown on the paid invoice) or installation date (as shown on the Gas Notification of Completion, Installation or Alteration), whichever is first. Be sure to provide copies of:
    1.  the Gas Notification of Completion, Installation or Alteration from your municipality or the BC Safety Authority
    2. the fully paid invoice including make, model number and serial number of the eligible boiler(s) purchase and installed. New construction projects may alternatively provide proof of payment in the form of a final progress draw invoice for the new building AND engineers approved shop drawings that indicate the job name and site address as proof of make, model and serial number(s) of the eligible boiler(s).
  5. For new construction
    1. New construction applications are also required to provide: a professional engineer’s estimate of the annual natural gas savings by upgrading to an eligible boiler over an atmospheric boiler.
  6. For the right-sizing bonus
    1. Participants wishing to receive the eligible boiler right-sizing bonus must complete and submit an estimate of the building heating load in accordance with FortisBC's boiler sizing & quality installation guidelines.
    2. Calculations showing the estimated building heating load as well as the invoice for the calculations must be submitted with the application.

We recommend you submit your application and supporting documents together to reduce processing time. If you can’t submit your application via email, please contact us to arrange an alternate method of delivery.

Early purchase option

​If you want to purchase a boiler well in advance of the expected install date (excess of the allowed 180 day deadline period) you must submit an early purchase form prior to purchasing a boiler. Once we’ve confirmed acceptance of your application, follow the steps in the How to apply section for your rebate.

Thermal Energy Service Providers (TESP) administration process and fee2

​Participants who are customers of TESP are subject to the following administration fees:

  • a $825 administration fee for evaluation of the program application
  • an additional $490 administration fee for evaluation of eligibility for the right-sizing bonus

The applicable administration fees are to be deducted directly from any rebate the participant is otherwise entitled. If the rebate is less than or equal to the applicable administration fee the net rebate provided to the participant will be $0. Participants who are customers of TESP are not eligible for a right-sizing bonus if their eligible boiler has an input rating of less than 1,500 MBH.

2A TESP is defined as an individual or organization other than the participant, who will/does own thermal energy generating assets such as the eligible water heaters, for the purpose of selling the thermal energy generated therefrom to the participant.
