Natural gas water heater rebates for non-profit organizations

Please note rebates for gas water heater are no longer available. If you've installed a water heater in 2023, here are the final deadlines for rebate applications:

  • All invoices must be dated on or before December 31, 2023.
  • You have up to 12 months from the invoice date to submit your rebate application  (December 31, 2024, at the latest).

If you've installed a gas water heaters in 2023, these are the eligibility requirements and rebate details:

Eligibility

  1. You must be a FortisBC commercial gas customer who owns or operates a registered charity that provides assistance to low-income persons, or a housing provider that is: 
    1. a local government
    2. housing society registered under the Societies Act
    3. a housing co-op registered under the Cooperative Association Act or
    4. a governing body of an Indigenous band, provided the housing is primarily for low-income households

    Note: top-up participants do not include:

    • school boards or educational institutions
    • health authorities or hospitals
    • public libraries
  2. You must be a property owner or long-term lease-holder of an existing commercial building or a builder/developer or property owner of a new commercial construction project.
  3. Water heaters must be used for service hot water (such as domestic hot water, sanitation or process hot water).
  4. Submit an application and supporting documentation no later than 365 days after the purchase date of the product(s) (as shown on the paid invoice). All invoices must be dated on or before December 31, 2023.

Rebate details

Rebates for each water heater are determined by its size (1,000 Btu/hour or MBH) and thermal efficiency (TE) rating.

How to apply

  1. Ensure the water heater you've purchased is an eligible model
  2. Contact a gas or mechanical contractor, licensed with Technical Safety BC, to install your water heater(s).
  3. Complete your rebate application online. Your rebate application must include:
    • a paid invoice showing the purchase date (no later than December 31, 2023)
    • product type
    • quantity, make
    • model number
    • total cost (before taxes)
    • installation permit number 
    • site address
    • the gas contractor’s Technical Safety B.C. license number
    New construction projects may alternatively provide proof of payment in the form of a final progress draw invoice for the new building and engineer-approved shop drawings that indicate the job name and site address as proof of make and model number(s) of the eligible water heater(s).

Thermal Energy Service Providers (TESP) administration fees1

If you are a customer of a TESP, your rebate application is subject to an $825 administration fee for evaluation of the rebate application. Any applicable fees will be deducted from the rebate amount. If the fees are equal to or more than the rebate amount you would otherwise receive, the net rebate will be $0.

1A TESP is as an individual or organization, other than the participant, who owns thermal energy generating assets such as eligible water heaters for the purpose of selling the thermal energy they generate to the participant.
