Renewable Natural Gas

Local farms, landfills and municipalities have teamed up with us to capture biogas from decomposing organic waste and purify it to make Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). We inject this sustainable energy source into our system and participating customers can choose to allocate five, 10, 25, 50 or 100 per cent of the natural gas they use in their homes and businesses as RNG.1

Environmental benefits of Renewable Natural Gas

Carbon neutral RNG helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also puts organic waste to work, rather than sending it to a landfill. Learn more about the benefits of this sustainable energy source.

What is Renewable Natural Gas and how is it made?

When bacteria digest decomposing organic matter, they create raw biogas, which is primarily methane. It can be cleaned and used for energy by our customers.

Affordable Renewable Natural Gas

It costs as little as $3 extra a month for an average household to support RNG. We have options to suit every budget and a calculator to show how much your monthly contribution will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Renewable Natural Gas safety

Sure it’s clean, but is it safe? Absolutely—the safety of RNG has been studied to ensure it meets the same high standards as conventional natural gas.

Become a Renewable Natural Gas supplier

We’re seeking new supply projects—we’re uniquely positioned to purchase RNG from suppliers and inject it into our system. Learn more about the benefits of becoming an RNG supplier.

Current Renewable Natural Gas suppliers

We couldn’t offer the RNG program without our dedicated suppliers. Check out the farms, landfills and municipalities that are helping us put waste to work, creating sustainable energy. Meet our Renewable Natural Gas suppliers.

Eligible natural gas customers can use Account Online to designate all or part of their natural gas use as RNG, for an additional cost. We’ll inject an equivalent amount of RNG into the FortisBC distribution system, displacing conventional natural gas that otherwise would have been brought into the system.2

You can also use Account Online to change your Renewable Natural Gas blend, or to stop taking part in the program. Your natural gas service won’t be interrupted.

1Renewable Natural Gas is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).
2In the event FortisBC has an imbalance between the demand for Renewable Natural Gas and the supply, FortisBC may purchase offsets to retain the equivalent greenhouse gas reductions that you would receive from the Renewable Natural Gas supply.
