Why we’re working with local farmers to create renewable energy
December 1, 2017 by Jasmine DeMarcos
As we come to the end of another year, many of us will ask ourselves: what do we want to improve upon for 2018? We’ll make all kinds of grand resolutions for the sake of our health, or for the greater benefit of our communities:
- I’m going to ride my bike to work every day! (Except when it rains, or snows, or it’s too hot, or I’m tired.)
- I’m going to practice yoga three times a week! (Except when I need to sleep in, or have an early-morning meeting.)
- I’m going to buy all of my groceries from local farmers and producers! (Except when I can’t make it to the farmers’ market, or if I can’t find locally-made peanut- butter cups.)
Let’s face it: making life changes is hard. Sometimes it’s good to give yourself a break and find easier ways of making a difference. Like signing up for Renewable Natural Gas.
We work with suppliers who take local organic waste and decompose it in special tanks to produce methane, which they capture and purify to make Renewable Natural Gas. This gas is injected into our existing pipelines for our customers to use, just like conventional natural gas.
We asked one of our Renewable Natural Gas suppliers, one of our Renewable Natural
Gas business customers, a renewable energy specialist, and members of our Renewable
Natural Gas team to tell us why they believe in this program.
It makes a difference. Since 2011, our Renewable Natural Gas customers have collectively helped reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 26,892 tonnes. That’s equivalent to taking 5,680 passenger cars off the road for a year.1 They’ve also helped us divert more than 8,500 tonnes of waste from landfills.2
It’s affordable. For the average customer using 90 gigajoules of natural gas per year, signing up for a 5 per cent blend of Renewable Natural Gas will cost as little as $2.63 extra per month.3
It’s easy. Renewable Natural Gas works the same way as regular natural gas—there’s no need to purchase new appliances. And you can sign up for Renewable Natural Gas online in seconds.
1 As of December 31, 2016, our customers have created a cumulative demand of approximately 540,000 gigajoules of Renewable Natural Gas which is equivalent to 26,892 avoided tonnes of CO2 or 8,534 tonnes of waste recycled instead of landfilled. (540,000 * 0.0498 tonnes C02e = 26,892) 26,892 tonnes of CO2 emissions is equivalent to the emissions of
5,680 passenger vehicles driven for one year.
