Savvy energy saver

When Barb bought her 70’s split-level White Rock home in 2011, it had brand new kitchen cabinets, stainless steel appliances, new paint and a beautifully landscaped yard. All the finishes that a homeowner desires, but as a savvy energy saver Barbara knew that beauty was only skin deep.

“The home inspection revealed an aging water heater, an older inefficient gas fireplace and virtually no insulation in the attic,” says Barb.

But knowing that no home is perfect, Barb took possession and made a plan of action to make if more efficient.

A new hot water heater was on my to-do list, but as the old one still worked replacing it wasn’t at the top,” says Barb. So with help from her two teenagers, Barb first looked at quick and low-cost ways to make the home more efficient such as weatherstripping doors and replacing inefficient lighting.  While perusing websites such as home improvement retailers and yes, FortisBC, for tips on making a home more energy efficient, Barb found out about our High-Efficiency Water Heater Pilot Program offered in the summer of 2011.

“I planned to wait to replace the water heater as long as I could, but FortisBC’s offer was one I couldn’t pass up.”  (A 50 per cent rebate.) Barb applied to the pilot and was approved for a hybrid high-efficiency water heater.

Her energy savings were immediate. In the summer months usage is down from about 3.5 gigajoules per month with the old water heater to less than one gigajoule per month with the new, hybrid 90 per cent thermal efficiency model. “And need I remind you that I have two teenagers,” laughs Barb.

Even though our pilot program is over, you can now qualify for a rebate of up to $1,000 when you purchase a high-efficiency water heater. Learn more.
