Smart thermostats

Space is limited, apply by December 31 for up to a $100 rebate.*

Replacing your manual or programmable thermostat with a smart thermostat can make it easier to turn down the heat when you don’t need it and save money on energy. If you live in Kelowna, apply for our smart thermostat pilot and you could get up to a $100 rebate* for purchasing an eligible smart thermostat and participating in studying the energy savings of this technology.

Eligibility requirements*

Please note that spaces are limited in this pilot.

  1. You must be a residential FortisBC electricity customer to apply.  If you are also a FortisBC natural gas customer, please have your natural gas account number available.
  2. The home where the thermostat is installed must be in Kelowna and your primary residence.
  3. You must have lived in your home (single family house, duplex or townhouse) for at least 12 months.
  4. Your primary heating system must be a natural gas forced air furnace, electric forced air furnace, central electric air source heat pump or central ground source heat pump. (Homes with electric baseboard heaters, ductless heat pumps or radiant in-floor heat are not eligible.)

  6. You must be replacing a manual or programmable thermostat with one of the eligible smart thermostats below purchased between March 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017.
  7. You must have Wi-Fi in your home and a smartphone to pair with the smart thermostat.

*You can find a complete list of requirements in the terms and conditions.

Eligible smart thermostats

Smart thermostats vary, but are designed to gather information about your family’s habits and temperature preferences to “learn” when to turn the heat down. As fall and winter are the heating season and more than 50 per cent of a home’s energy use is for space heating,† optimizing your home’s heating can reduce energy use, save money on energy bills and provide comfort and convenience. Smart thermostats can also be paired with a smartphone app to control your heating system remotely.

Learn more about the thermostats eligible for the program at each manufacturer’s website:

You can purchase a thermostat online, at local home improvement stores or from a local natural gas or electrical contractor.

‡Please note the ecobee3 lite or Honeywell Lyric T5 Apple HomeKit Enabled Wi-Fi Thermostat are not eligible for this pilot.

Important: FortisBC is not involved with the manufacture of or data collection by smart thermostats. Accordingly, we strongly recommend you carefully review the terms and conditions and privacy policy applicable to the particular smart thermostat you purchase.

Smart thermostat tips

  • During setup, choose settings to maximize energy savings, such as enabling features for the thermostat to know when you’re away.
  • To save energy and stay cosy, schedule the thermostat to adjust to 17 °C when you’re out or asleep and no more than 20 °C when home and awake. Get tips on setting your initial smart thermostat schedule in our blog
  • And remember, sweaters are still great technology for keeping warm!

Recycling your old thermostat
