Industrial optimization

If you’re an owner or long-term lease holder of an industrial facility, the Industrial Optimization Program can help you use electricity and natural gas more efficiently for process-related activities. Through funding for plant wide audits, feasibility studies and the implementation of energy conservation measures (ECM), we’ll support you to improve the energy performance of your operations.

Eligibility requirements1

Retrofit, expansion and new construction projects are eligible for electricity and/or natural gas funding.

For natural gas projects your facility must:

  1. consume a minimum of 10,000 gigajoules of natural gas annually
  2. use natural gas as an input to industrial production2
  3. be owned or leased long-term by the applicant
  4. retrofit, expansion or new construction projects are eligible

For electricity projects your facility must:

  1. be a FortisBC electricity customer on Rate Schedules 30, 31, 32 or 33 or municipal3 electricity customer
  2. consume a minimum of three gigawatt hours of electricity annually
  3. be owned or leased long-term by the applicant

1You can find a complete list of requirements in the Participant’s guide.
2Industrial production is a manufacturing or transformative process in which raw materials are transformed into finished goods for the purpose of resale with the use of machines, tools and labour.
3Grand Forks, Penticton, Summerland and Nelson Hydro.

 Incentives available

Plant wide audit

We can provide funding towards the cost of having a professional engineer perform a high-level, whole facility audit to identify opportunities to use electricity and/or natural gas more efficiently. ECMs identified in the audit will be presented in a report and will outline cost and savings estimates at a +/- 50 per cent uncertainty level.

To qualify for funding, the report must be prepared by a FortisBC approved consultant and must meet plant wide audit report requirements.

Feasibility study

We can provide funding towards the cost of a feasibility study for a specific process or system within your facility to fully investigate an opportunity to use electricity and/or natural gas more efficiently. The ECM identified in the study will be presented in a report and will outline cost and savings estimates at a +/- 10 per cent uncertainty level.

To qualify for funding, the report must be prepared by a FortisBC approved consultant and must meet feasibility study report requirements.

Technology implementation and rebates
We can provide funding to help with the cost of installing high‐efficiency equipment that will result in the more efficient use of natural gas and electricity at the facility. Rebates are available for compressed air, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), variable speed drives, water heating and other industrial equipment.
List of approved consultants

To participate in this program, you’re required to work with a consultant from this list of FortisBC-approved consultants.
