Appliance Maintenance Rebate Program - frequently asked questions

 Program eligibility

Who is eligible for the rebate?

FortisBC residential natural gas customers with an individual gas meter are eligible for the rebate.

Are high-rise, condominium units and strata properties eligible?

Properties without individual metering—such as high-rises, strata properties and most condominium units—are not eligible for this rebate.

How many rebates can I apply for?

The rebate is limited to one $25 fireplace rebate and one $25 furnace or boiler rebate, with a maximum $50 rebate allowed per dwelling.

Can the service be done by any gas contractor?
The contractor servicing your appliance must be a Technical Safety BC licensed natural gas contractor, and their licence number must be provided as part of your rebate application. Our directory can help you find a licensed contractor in your area.
What do I do if I’m a landlord paying for the service on behalf of my tenant?

When filling out your application, answer “no” to the question of whether you own the FortisBC account at the address where the service was performed, and then provide your mailing address and we’ll mail you the rebate cheque.

What do I do if I move after my service is completed?
If your new home has a FortisBC natural gas account, your account number will remain the same—and your rebate will still appear as a bill credit. If your new home doesn’t have a FortisBC natural gas account, answer “no” to the question of whether you own the FortisBC account at the address where the service was performed, and then provide your new mailing address and we’ll mail you the rebate cheque.

 Submitting your application

How do I claim the rebate?

Once your furnace or boiler and/or fireplace is serviced, apply online for your rebate. You’ll need to provide:

  • your FortisBC natural gas account number (your rebate will be applied as a bill credit to this account)
  • the gas contractor’s Technical Safety BC licence number
  • a scanned copy of your paid service invoice outlining the date of service and details of the work performed

To apply by mail or email, complete the application and send it along with a copy of your paid service invoice indicating the date of service, details of the work performed and the gas contractor’s Technical Safety BC licence number to appliancemaintenance@fortisbc.com or mail to:

Surrey, BC V4N 0E8

If you have any questions about the online application, please call 1-800-663-8400 or email appliancemaintenance@fortisbc.com.

Do I need to submit a separate application for each appliance serviced?

If your furnace or boiler and/or fireplace service took place at the same address, you’ll only need to submit one application form. Please remember to include the paid invoices for both services.

How do I know you’ve received my application?

Once you’ve submitted your application online, you’ll receive a confirmation email at the email address you provided. Your confirmation email will include a reference number, which you can use to inquire about your application. Those submitting their applications by mail will not receive confirmation that their application has been received.

 Receiving your rebate

How will I receive my rebate?
Your rebate will be applied as a credit on your monthly natural gas bill. The credit will be a reduction in the amount you owe on your natural gas bill. If we can’t process your bill credit for any reason, we’ll send you a rebate cheque in the mail.
How will I know if the credit has been applied to my FortisBC natural gas bill?

The credit, called the Appliance Service Rebate, will appear under the “Other charges and taxes” section of your natural gas bill. It will be applied prior to calculating the amount owing on your bill. See a sample bill:

Why does processing of applications take up to 12 weeks?

We audit and validate each application prior to approving the rebate. If an application is missing information or further supporting documentation is required, the processing time may be longer than 12 weeks for applications sent by mail or email or eight weeks for online applications.

 Important dates

What are the deadlines?

The service must be performed between May 14 and August 17, 2018. Services performed outside of these program dates will not be eligible for the rebate. Rebate applications must be submitted no later than September 14, 2018.

What if my application goes missing?

FortisBC is not responsible for lost, damaged, incomplete, illegible or late applications. Once you’ve submitted your application online, you’ll receive a confirmation email at the email address you provided. Those submitting their applications by mail will not receive confirmation that their application has been received.

Can I check on the status of my application?

You can email us at appliancemaintenance@fortisbc.com or call 1-800-663-8400. Please be ready to provide your FortisBC account number or the reference number included in your confirmation email.
