Important policy information

The Climate Action Secretariat (CAS) has acknowledged that FortisBC’s Renewable Natural Gas displaces natural gas with the use of a carbon neutral fuel. This enables public-sector organizations to reduce their reportable greenhouse gas emissions by participating in our Renewable Natural Gas program.1

FortisBC’s role

Each year, FortisBC confirms the emission reduction associated with Renewable Natural Gas and publishes it here.

To make it easier for you, FortisBC will clearly distinguish the gigajoules (GJ) value of Renewable Natural Gas (referred to as biomethane) you have purchased on your bill.

We’re committed to helping ensure you can meet your reporting requirements. Along with the billing and annual reconfirmation, FortisBC:

  • ensures the environmental attributes of the Renewable Natural Gas have not been and will not be recognized under any other greenhouse gas reduction program;
  • continues to review its new Renewable Natural Gas production facilities to independently certify them as producing carbon neutral gas;
  • publishes annual reports through its regulator, the BC Utilities Commission, specifying total volumes of Renewable Natural Gas purchased.

What this means for public-sector organizations

Find the amount of Renewable Natural Gas purchased from FortisBC on your bill and enter it into the province of British Columbia recognized SMARTTool along with your conventional natural gas consumption. The SMARTTool will account for the emissions reduction associated with using Renewable Natural Gas rather than conventional natural gas. The actual amount of emissions associated with Renewable Natural Gas, as recognized by the CAS, is shown below in the table.

SMARTTool: Natural gas and Renewable Natural Gas emissions factors

Fuel type Energy conversion factor Kg/GJ
  Bio CO2 Co2 CH4 N2O CO2e
Natural gas 0.03874 GJ/m3 - 49.58 0.0010 0.0009 49.87
Renewable Natural Gas 0.03874 GJ/m3 49.58 - 0.0010 0.0009 0.2931

1Renewable Natural Gas is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create carbon neutral Renewable Natural Gas (also called biomethane).
