Buying a pool heater

Price considerations

Prices can range from $700 to over $2,000 depending on the size and type of your pool - compare prices between retailers for the best deal.

Pick the right temperature for you:

If you use your pool for exercise or energetic play, 22°C (72°F) might be just right. This will save you 65 per cent compared to the more average 26°C (79°F). For relaxing, especially on chillier days, temperatures up to 30°C (86°F) might be more comfortable – but it may cost up to 75 per cent more.

Automatic timers and thermostats can be set to keep the temperature low when the pool is not in use.

Keep these factors in mind:

  • Volume and surface area of your pool.
  • Above-ground or in-ground pool: their heating needs are different.
  • Temperature that you like to keep the water.
  • How hot it will be during the day?
  • How cool it will get at night?

For example, if your pool is 15 by 20 feet (4.5 by 6 m), choose a heater that’s sized for 300 square feet (27 m2) of surface area. Wind scatters your heat, so if your pool is in a windy area, consider buying a larger heater. Your local pool dealer will be able to help you select the right size heater for your pool.

An above-ground pool may be a better choice if you are a more casual user. However, they are less efficient in heat insulation. Be sure to re-insulate above-ground pools each season.
