How do you make energy out of food scraps?

When we tell people we offer Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), their response is usually:

“Cool! Uh, what is Renewable Natural Gas?”

We’re glad you asked! We love talking about this locally-made, carbon-neutral energy source. We’ve been working with local farmers and municipalities to produce RNG since 2011, and the program has been growing steadily with more customers signing up every year to support it.

How it works, in a nutshell:

  1. Farm waste, food scraps and decomposing landfill waste create methane gas.
  2. We capture this methane and purify it to make RNG—which works exactly the same way as conventional natural gas.
  3. We inject the RNG into our existing natural gas system.
  4. FortisBC natural gas customers can sign up for RNG. They don’t need to change their appliances, or do anything differently.
