Capital projects

Sustaining and enhancing the environment is a priority for FortisBC. The Company’s project teams include environmental specialists who understand the local environment including fish and wildlife habitat, native plants and risk of invasive weeds, and other environmental aspects. Project planners consider all possible environmental impacts identified through public and stakeholder input and include this information in applications submitted to the BC Utilities Commission. Local, provincial, and federal government authorities, agencies, and organizations are consulted during development of the project plans.

Major projects, such as the Big White Supply Project and the Okanagan Transmission Reinforcement Project, also involve comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA). The company recognizes that although ESIA’s are not a regulatory requirement there is tremendous value in the information gathered during an ESIA for BCUC submissions and for minimizing environmental risks during and post construction.
