Engineer-in-Training program

Our future success depends on developing the skills and abilities of our young talent. FortisBC’s Engineer-in-Training program helps recent engineering graduates gain practical experience through exposure to a variety of development opportunities in our natural gas and electricity businesses.

Technical and business experience

The Engineer-in-Training program is designed to help you build connections and develop a technical, operational and financial understanding of our business through a series of rotational placements. These will help you complete your experience requirements to register as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC), which includes experience in the key competency areas reviewed by APEGBC:

  • application of theory
  • practical experience
  • management of engineering
  • communication skills
  • social implications
  • sustainability

There is a well-established progression plan for graduates to go on to technical and business leadership roles at FortisBC.

You’ll work in several different departments during the four-year program, and you may have a mentor to support your development of technical skills and provide career advice and coaching. You’re encouraged to attend regular site visits to gain an understanding of operational challenges. You may also have opportunities for further classroom development.

You’ll be based at one location but your rotations may take you throughout BC, including the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Okanagan and Kootenays. The duration of the placement depends on your previous work experience and includes rotations in:

An engineering rotation will expose you to the technical aspects of capital and maintenance projects. You will be involved in analyzing specific issues and be required to complete feasibility and economic assessments.

System planning

A system planning rotation will require researching, investigating and planning improvements to the FortisBC transmission and distribution system. You will be involved in preparing and running models of the system in your research for future projects and system growth.

During a generation rotation, you will be working at one of FortisBC’s hydroelectric generation facilities. This will give you practical experience in a plant setting and you will be involved in day-to-day operations and development of capital projects to optimize plant utilization.

System control centre

In a rotation in the system control centre, you will provide technical support for operation issues, outage coordination, water management and protection schemes. You will also review risk assessments for planned system outages and edit programming of control centre software systems.

Project management

In the Project Management Office, you will be responsible for planning, executing and closing out phases of capital and maintenance projects at FortisBC. You will coordinate all aspects of a project and ensure cost and timeline deliverables are met.

This rotation will get you into the field and give you hands-on experience working in and around distribution and transmission assets. You will plan, coordinate and execute field work to deliver safe, reliable energy to our customers.

You may also gain experience in non-technical areas such as:

  • business development
  • finance (information technology, budgeting, accounting, purchasing, warehousing and billing)
  • customer service (energy efficiency, human resources, environment and safety)
