Open at front with chain curtain

If your natural gas fireplace is open with a chain curtain (similar to a traditional wood masonry fireplace), your home’s heated air is escaping up the chimney. Many of these older types of fireplaces are very inefficient. Usually referred to as decorative fireplaces, they are not meant for heating.  Other types of decorative fireplaces with glass fronts have louvers or grilles to take in room air for combustion and can let heated air escape. If you feel a draft near your fireplace it may be a decorative unit.

With fireplace efficiency ratings between 61 and 82 per cent, EnerChoice® natural gas fireplaces are designed to provide efficient space heating. They use outdoor air for combustion and are sealed so the heated air stays in the room instead of escaping up the chimney or out the vent. Some models also feature an adjustable flame height, automatic thermostat control, electronic ignition and sophisticated remote controls.

Turn your hearth into a hub of high efficiency by upgrading to an energy-efficient EnerChoice natural gas fireplace. Install a FortisBC eligible model and you could qualify for a $300 rebate.
