We provide reliable electrical energy to all homes and businesses within our British Columbia service territory. However, from time to time, outages can occur.

Most power outages are unintended, brief and the result of extreme weather. In some cases we need to perform service, which may result in your power being out. To help you in either case, we have tips on what to do in a power outage.

Scheduled outages

In order to maintain a high level of power quality and service, we do weekly maintenance upgrades and activities throughout our service territory. This type of regular maintenance prevents more extensive, unplanned outages in the future. These maintenance services require temporary disconnection of power to ensure the safety of our staff. These temporary outages will affect customers for varying periods of time. We make every effort to alert customers on an affected route in advance of a planned outage. If you feel we do not have the correct contact information to reach you with, call us toll-free at 1-866-4FORTIS (1-866-436-7847) with your correct information.

Despite the harsh terrain and varied climates in our service area, our electric service is among the most reliable in North America. We have fewer outages than most other utilities and restore the power quickly when an outage does occur.

Although most accidental outages are beyond anyone's control, together we can do something about the outages caused by trees. We have an extensive brushing program to keep the trees clear of its lines. As a home or business owner, you can help in many ways:

  • remove trees that may contact service lines leading from power lines to your home or business;
  • take care not to plant trees where they will interfere with the lines as they grow;
  • report potential roadside problems to us.
