Does FortisBC sell ASHPs?
No. FortisBC promotes the use of ASHPs because it is an energy efficient technology that allows customers to reduce their energy usage and save money on their energy bill.
How much does an ASHP cost?
The typical cost for an ASHP that can service a 1400 sq. ft. home is approximately $4000 -$7000, depending on model and installation costs. Heating that home with an ASHP is estimated to cost approximately $550 per year, compared to an electric baseboard system which would cost about $900.
Does FortisBC offer any incentives or rebates for ASHPs?
Yes. FortisBC customers, and those customers served by the electrical utilities of Grand Forks, Kelowna, Penticton, Summerland and Nelson Hydro are eligible for the following:
- A cash rebate of $250 or more; or
- A loan of up to $5000 at 4.9% for 10 years (OAC).
Do I need to have an alternative source of heat?
Yes. Depending on the climate you live in, a heat pump will meet about 3/4 of your heating needs. An ASHP will work in temperatures down to -5° Celcius, therefore it is necessary to have a back-up source of heat, like electrical or gas heating.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical service?
A qualified ASHP contractor will let you know if your panel is adequate or not. A typical heat pump requires a 30 amp breaker.
Will I need a new furnace?
If the fan from your furnace does not provide enough air flow throughout your home, you may need to install a new furnace to maximize your home’s energy efficiency. A qualified contractor will be able to help you decide.
Can I install an ASHP if I have electric baseboards?
Yes. You can install a ductless ASHP, which will heat up to 1000 sq. ft. Also, a wall unit heat pump will work with your home’s existing wiring, and will heat approximately 700 sq. ft. A qualified contractor will be able to help you decide.
Where can I buy an ASHP unit?
ASHPs are available for purchase through numerous contractors across south central BC. To find a list of contractors and dealers in your area, see the information above, call FortisBC PowersSense at 1-866-4FORTIS (1-866-436-7847) or look in your local Yellow Pages under ‘Heat Pump’ or ‘Heating’.
How do I decide which ASHP to buy?
Contact several heating contractors and compare brands, features and prices. To learn more about heat pump technology, or to download an informational sheet on tips to selecting a contractor, see the information above. Keep in mind that ASHP units are rated. The rating tells you how efficiently a unit will heat and cool your home.
What ratings should I look for?
When buying an ASHP, there are three important ratings to consider: heating, cooling and sound.
SEER – seasonal energy efficiency ratio (cooling efficiency). Look for a minimum 13 SEER rating. A higher rating indicates a more energy efficient the unit.
HSPF –heating season performance factor (heating efficiency). It is best to look for a minimum 8 HSPF rating.
Decibels rating – decibels are a rating on sound. To give you a comparison, the sound from a microwave is 60 decibels. A lower rating indicates a quieter unit.
