FortisBC is always searching for the right candidates for Power Line Technician (PLT) positions throughout the southern interior of BC. PLTs are responsible for the construction and maintenance of low and high voltage power lines. Some of the typical duties are listed below:
- Building, repairing and maintaining overhead & underground power lines and associated equipment
- Operating large equipment such as cranes, derricks and aerial man lifts
- Responding to customer needs and requirements
Becoming a PLT requires highly specialized training, and FortisBC offers two programs to give qualified applicants the skills that they require. For the most part, completion of the PLT Pre-Apprenticeship is the primary means of entrance into the PLT Apprenticeship Program.
Apprenticeship Training Program
The apprenticeship program is a 42 to 48 month term. The duration of the term depends on successful completion of ongoing training and other requisite job duties. Successful candidates will be expected to travel to various locations around FortisBC’s service area to gain experience. Under direct supervision, program participants perform construction and maintenance of low and high voltage power lines.
Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program
The pre-apprentice program is a structured temporary probationary period for up to eight months. Candidates complete hands-on electrical and labour related duties. Pre-apprentices are provided with FortisBC in-house and on the job training, which exposes them to FortisBC's line crew operations. Upon completion of the pre-apprenticeship program, individuals may have the opportunity to apply for PLT apprenticeship positions within FortisBC.
