This winter, forecasters are predicting colder and wetter than normal conditions. While this might be good news for winter sports enthusiasts, it also serves as a reminder that storm season is here and road conditions can be hazardous throughout the province.
Drive carefully this winter. Slow down and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.
Watch for crews working beside the roads
FortisBC crews work year round in all weather conditions to provide you safe and reliable access to electricity. Slow down and obey all traffic signs around work crews. Help us make sure our employees go home safe every day.
Take care on slippery roads
Accidents around power poles are not only dangerous for drivers; they can also cause problems for nearby street lights, homes and businesses when the power goes out.
If you're involved in an accident where poles or wires are knocked down on a vehicle, it's important to know what to do:
- Remain calm, stay in your vehicle, and wait until help arrives. If you must exit - jump clear of the vehicle with both feet landing on the ground together. Once you're out of the vehicle, DO NOT take steps or touch the vehicle. Shuffle your feet keeping both on the ground at all times.
- If you come across an accident that involves power lines, do not become a victim by approaching the vehicle. Remember, the surrounding ground may become energized.
- Make sure to stay at least 10 metres (30 feet) away from downed power lines. Watch out for conductive materials like fences. Try to help secure the area by staying at least 10 metres (30 feet) away, call 911 and wait until FortisBC crews can get there.
