Be an energy champion

Be an energy champion

Is saving the environment important to you? It is for FortisBC. It's all about working as a team to create a cleaner future.

We use a lot of energy around the home, usually in the form of natural gas or electricity. In many homes, natural gas is used to make rooms warm and water hot. We’re also out in the community, spreading the word about natural gas and how you can save energy. Check out some of the sporting events and activities we support.

The BC Lions could visit your school

The BC Lions FortisBC Energy Champions program will be visiting 75 elementary schools throughout the lower mainland, Vancouver Island, the Interior and Northern BC in 2012. Players will be talking to K – 7 students about the importance of environmental responsibility and being an Energy Champion. Check out the list of schools for upcoming programs.

Join the team - reduce your energy use

You can be an energy champion by making a habit of doing simple things around your house to conserve energy. Plus, you'll help your family save money too.

A dozen easy ways to save energy
1.

Talk to your parents about using a programmable thermostat.

Save up to 15 per cent on your home's heating bill. That's as much as $100 a year!
2.

Close doors and windows when it's cold outside.

An open door allows warm air to escape from your house. That's not good.

3.

If you're cold, put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat.

Put on a sweater to keep warm and save energy.

4.

Ask your parents to change the furnace filter every six months.

A new filter helps keep the motor running better.
5.

Turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth.

This saves seven to 12 litres of water a minute. That's about 33 cans of pop.

6.

Make your showers short. Five minutes is long enough to get clean.

If your daily shower is only five minutes long you could save enough money in one year to buy some new video games.

7.

Ask your parents to install a low-flow kitchen faucet aerator.

These gadgets use 30 per cent less water. That's a lot of water balloons!

8.

Run the dishwasher only when it's full.

Your dishwasher uses the same amount of energy whether it's half full or overfull.

9.

Tell your parents about ENERGY STAR® appliances.

ENERGY STAR furnaces, fridges, dishwashers and washing machines use less energy than other models.

10.
Wash your clothes in cold water.

You'll save hot water, use less energy and help the environment.
11.

Hang your clothes to dry or use the sun when possible.

The sun is free energy thanks to Mother Nature! You could buy candy every week with the money you save.

12.

Make a door sock for the bottom of drafty doors.

Door socks help keep drafts out.
