Nelson's grand old dame awash in savings

In 1898, before the words energy and efficiency joined together to become part of our modern day vernacular, Nelson’s Hume Hotel opened its doors to a new era in first-class service for the region.

Flash forward a hundred plus years and the hotel has gone through numerous owners and almost as many renovations. With its storied history and first class service, the Hume is known today as the grand old dame of Nelson, attracting guests from around the world. Supporting the service that customers expect, is reliable hot water for the hotel’s three restaurants and 43 rooms.

But after a fire at an adjoining property in the summer of 2010 caused a flood at the Hume Hotel, the one central water heater had to be replaced.

“Since we had to replace it, we decided to go high-efficiency and lessen our impact on the environment at the same time,” says hotel manager Ryan Martin. “And it was great to get a $4,500 rebate from FortisBC through their Efficient Commercial Water Heater Program for installing a Raypack MVB model.”

The whole process was seamless. Contractor Andrew Sheret did the paperwork and all Martin had to do was sign the application.

But has he experienced any savings? “Our natural gas consumption for hot water is actually down a bit,” said Martin. “And we’ve been so busy the last year, our hot water consumption has actually increased.”
