FortisBC’s Industrial Technology Retrofit Program offers incentives* to large industrial natural gas customers for energy efficiency improvement projects. A variety of retrofits and custom designed project types are eligible under this program and two incentive options are available. Better yet, we’ll work with you every step of the way to determine the option right for your project.
Option 1: up to 75% funding (up to $375,000)
Receive up to 75% funding, to a maximum of $375,000, for qualifying energy efficiency upgrade projects and reduce the payback period on your investment to as little as one year. This comprehensive incentive helps covers the costs of your project including equipment, installation, removal and taxes.
- This initiative is for you if...
- your facility uses more than 10,000 GJ natural gas annually (no upper limit)
- your plant has been operational for a minimum of 1 year prior to application
- your projected payback is greater than 1 year (prior to incentive application)
- your project involves an upgrade with expected lifespan of 10 years or more and technology that is measurable and verifiable
- the cost of the project is less than $65 per gigajoule saved annually
Example: If you are planning a system upgrade that will cost $500,000, your minimum annual savings must be 7,692 GJ or more. $500,000 ∕ $65/GJ = 7,692 GJ - How it works:
To determine the total project incentive, we use the smaller of the following:*
- $5/GJ for natural gas saved over a period of 3 years.
- the incentive amount needed to reduce the payback period to 1 year, or
* The maximum amount of incentive is 75% of the total project cost, up to a maximum of $375,000.

Option 2: up to 50% funding (up to $1,000,000)
Receive up to 50% funding, to a maximum of $1,000,000, for qualifying energy efficiency upgrade projects and reduce the payback period on your investment to as little as two years. This comprehensive incentive covers the costs of your project including equipment, installation, removal and taxes.
- This initiative is for you if...
- your facility uses more than 100,000 GJ natural gas annually
- your plant has been operational for a minimum of 1 year prior to application
- your projected payback is greater than 2 years (prior to incentive application)
- your project involves an upgrade with expected lifespan of 10 years or more and technology that is measurable and verifiable
- the cost of the project is less than $65 per gigajoule saved annually
Example: If you are planning a system upgrade that will cost $725,000, your minimum annual savings must be 11,154 GJ or more. $725,000 ∕ $65/GJ = 11,154 GJ - How it works:
To determine the total project incentive, we use the smaller of the following two amounts**:
- the incentive amount needed to reduce the payback period to 2 years, or
- $5/GJ for natural gas saved over a period of 3 years.
** The maximum amount of incentive is 50% of the total project cost, up to a maximum of $1,000,000.

*Industrial customers and their associated process loads use natural gas as an input to a manufacturing/transformative process where raw materials are transformed into finished goods (industrial production) with the use of machines, tools and labor for the purpose of resale. Process loads do not include space heating or domestic hot water for the purpose of maintaining human comfort or sanitation.
