Building a new facility?

Energy efficiency when building a new facility

Whatever business you're in, energy costs can account for a significant portion of your overhead costs. If you’re planning to build a new facility, FortisBC PowerSense can offer you expert advice as well as valuable rebates on energy efficient technologies and solutions to reduce energy consumption and costs.

Plan for energy efficiency from the start

PowerSense encourages developers to meet or exceed the technical guidelines of the BC Building Code for new buildings) by at least 25%. ASHRAE 90.1 (2004), the Energy Standard for Buildings except low-rise residential buildings, is the BC building code requirement. If your building is going for LEED certification, the energy consumption baseline is ASHRAE 90.1 (2007).

PowerSense rebates for new commercial buildings

Financial assistance is available when building new facilities. Your PowerSense technical advisor can provide a free initial assessment of the building design and its level of energy efficiency.  If a more detailed energy assessment is required, additional financial assistance may be available.

Rebates are available on the incremental cost of energy saving measures incorporated into the building design and equipment selection.  The PowerSense rebate for commercial buildings is based on 9¢ per estimated annual kW.h savings, with the maximum rebate calculated to achieve a two-year payback on incremental cost.

Know the facts
It is a myth that computers use large amounts of energy when starting up, or that constant start-ups damage components or lead to electrical surges. It is much more cost-effective to shut the computer down when you are finished using it, and doing so actually reduces wear on your system.
