Forest fire safety

Public and employee safety is the number one priority for FortisBC. FortisBC works with provincial emergency officials to monitor any wildfire in BC. We also work with local fire and emergency authorities to ensure public safety, and protect our natural gas and electricity infrastructure.

What to do if under evacuation order

Turn off any sensitive devices, TVs, home theater systems, computers, etc., and unplug them from the wall.

Service interruptions due to wildfires

FortisBC will turn off electricity service if fire or emergency officials request it as a precautionary measure, or if there is an immediate threat to FortisBC infrastructure.

Returning after evacuation

The decision to lift the evacuation order is made by local fire officials after consultation with other agencies, including FortisBC. Once the order is lifted, customers will be able to return to their homes.

If electricity has been turned off due to an emergency, FortisBC will first ensure the electricity infrastructure is safe before reconnecting power.

If your home’s electrical system, such as the wiring, electricity meter or circuit breaker panel, has been damaged by the fire, a BC Safety Authority registered electrician must perform a safety inspection before power can be reconnected. Licensed electricians are listed at with the BC Safety Authority.

Electricity Safety

Electrical accidents can produce serious injuries or even death. If you see a downed power line, contact FortisBC immediately. Our crews have the necessary training, equipment and knowledge to deal with the situation safely.
