Power surges are triggered by many factors, including adverse weather conditions and when trees, construction equipment, vehicles or wildlife accidentally make contact with power lines.
Despite the best efforts of electric utilities, it is impossible to guarantee that power surges won’t happen. System disturbances may arise outside of a utility’s control and as a result, the utility cannot compensate customers for damage. However, FortisBC has and will continue to take all reasonable steps to minimize the risk of surges and outages.
Today’s modern electronic devices, including computers, telephones, microwaves and home entertainment systems, are much more sensitive to voltage increases than in the past. As a result, electrical disturbances can cause damage to electrical equipment. This damage is not always easy to spot. For instance, some hard-wired smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and panel-mounted surge protectors may need a closer look. Indicator lights may suggest that they are operating, when in fact, a light may only mean that an electrical current is still flowing through the device. Different makes and models have different manufacturer test procedures, so it is best to read labels closely prior to making a purchase.
For peace of mind, the best way to ensure protection is to have hard-wired devices inspected by a qualified electrician. For plug-in protective devices, refer to the manufacturers’ instructions. If there is any doubt, have the equipment replaced.
Customer, public, and employee safety continues to be of utmost importance to us. Despite the extremely small likelihood that such events will occur, we continue to improve our electrical system to minimize these disturbances. As a part of this commitment to safety, we also want to inform our customers about the steps necessary to ensure their safety and to protect their property.
