Causes of power outages

Emergency outages

Emergency power outages may be caused by circumstances that are beyond our control such as high winds, snow, lightning, equipment failure, vehicle accidents, and even birds and animals. Although, most accidental outages are beyond anyone's control, to prevent outages caused by trees, FortisBC has an brushing program to keep the trees clear from lines.

Scheduled outages

In order to maintain a high level of power quality and service, FortisBC performs maintenance upgrades and activities throughout our service area. This type of regular maintenance prevents more extensive, unplanned outages in the future. These repairs sometimes require temporary disconnection of power to ensure the safety of our staff. These temporary outages impact customers for varying periods of time.

FortisBC makes every effort to alert customers in an affected area in advance of a planned outage. If you are concerned that your contact information is out-of-date, please call us toll-free at 1-866-436-7847.
